Chapter Eight
Lucas got home a little before noon, and it was just his luck that Dean’s grandmother was already awake.
“Lucas?” she called out to him. “Is that you?”
Rolling his eyes, Lucas kicked off his sneakers and rounded the corner, a fake smile plastered on his face as he remembered Bran’s advice and prepared to play nice.
But Dean’s angry glare made him stop in his tracks.
“Where have you been?” the Alpha asked, his voice a barely controlled guttural growl.
“Uh,” Lucas stalled. He hadn’t thought about what he was going to say to Dean – in fact; he hadn’t planned to say anything at all. He’d expected to get back and take a shower, and wash away any vampire scent that he might’ve picked up from Bran and James. But now Dean was already home, sitting on the couch with his body hunched over his knees and his nostrils flaring.
“You smell like cinnamon,” Grandma Gray commented coolly.
Lucas felt his heart sink. Dean knew what that meant.
“So,” he said. “You went to see Bran.”
Lucas could see where this was going, and he was not about to have that conversation in front of Dean’s evil grandmother. So, giving the alpha a look, he turned on his heel and marched down the hall, picking his feet up into a jog the moment that he turned the corner. Dean was, of course, hot on his tail.
The second that he stepped into the room, Dean slammed the door behind them, making Lucas wince.
“Lucas—”
“What did you expect?!” Lucas yelled at him. “You leave me home with her, and you think I’m just going to sit here and take it?”
That made Dean pause, hesitating as he reached out for Lucas. “I thought we talked about this,” he said.
“No, you talked,” Lucas sighed, exasperated as he flopped backward onto their bed. “I listened.”
“Not well enough,” Dean growled, moving to stand over him. “I said to stay away from vampires—”
“Oh!” Lucas yelled, sitting back up. “That again? Jesus, Dean. I thought we were finally talking about your grandmother!”
“Lucas, she’s an old woman who came to visit her grandson,” Dean said, crossing his arms. “Let her be.”
“Really?” Lucas jumped up to his feet. “That’s your answer? ‘Lucas, stop being a bully,’ is how you’re going to handle this?”
Dean looked like he was ready to explode. “There’s nothing to handle!”
Lucas stared at him. Dean had never been one to ignore Lucas or any problems – no matter how small, imagined or otherwise – that the Omega had ever brought to his attention before. This wasn’t like him.
“You can’t expect him to choose.”
Lucas sighed and shook his head softly. “You’re right,” he said whispered. “I’m… I’m glad that you’re home.”
“I had a half day,” Dean said gruffly, apparently suspicious of Lucas’ sudden submission. “I came home to take you and Gran out to eat, but she said that you’d slipped out before she’d even woken up.”
“Sorry,” Lucas said emotionlessly. “Still want to go?”
“Yes,” Dean admitted. Clasping and unclasping his hands impatiently, he turned towards the door.
